Cultural Revolution Ration Book

The Cultural Revolution in China not only affected the way people thought, it also affected what they ate.

This relic from times past belonged to what appears to be a Ms. Chen, who was admonished to save food every time she looked at the cover as stated by a "Top Directive" The book was officially called, "The People's Staple Foodstuffs Ration Book" The inside pages begin in August 1973 and continue monthly to December 1977. We can see the staple foods consumed by Ms. Yuan and her family - cooking oil, flour and of course rice.

Considering the fact that Ms. Chen carried this for nearly 5 years, it is in remarkably good condition. The cover is still intact to keep everything together. All of the internal pages are present, 53 in total.
