The East is Red |

During the Cultural Revolution in China a group of people became known as the Red Guards. Their mission was to ensure that the population were good communists and followers of the Party. This group became feared because they acted as judge and jury and developed their own style of justice. They were identified mainly from the red armbands they wore.

Small Silk Flag - People's China Magazine 1963
This flag was produced to mark the 10th anniversary of People's China magazine in 1963. It is a quality item, extremely well made with a red silk front and a white silk back. The red silk is embroidered as is the border, 'Commemoration of People's China 10th Anniversary of Starting Publication, 1953-1963'.

Large Cultural Revolution Silk Flag with Badge
During the Cultural Revolution in China (c. 1966-1976) revolutionary committees were formed at various factories and schools. Members of these committees would then join huge rallies, proudly displaying the flag of their committee. These flags would also be displayed at individual factories or schools.
The plastic badge that accompanies the flag was worn by the flag barer and says "Capital [Beijing] People's Militia Person on Duty". It measures 9.5 cm (3.75 inches) x 11.5 cm (4.5 inches).
