Tianjin University Silk Brocade

Tianjin University has the distinction of being the first institute of higher learning in China, founded in 1895 by Sheng Xuanhuai and Charles Tenney. Originally known as Peiyang University, it was setup as an American style university by Tenney, who served as the General Supervisor from 1895 to 1906.

Tianjin University remains one of the key universities in China and has a long list of distinguished alumni, including many Chinese firsts – world court judge, WTO member, IOC member.

During the Cultural Revolution, the university likely benefited from the fact that Zhou Enlai had gone to school at the nearby Nankai University.

The main building on the silk remains as a more recent picture shows below.

This silk has been hand painted and is in very good condition with no holes or tears. It is marked as being 42 cm (16.5 inches) x 62 cm (24.5 inches).The left side of the silk states it was made in Hangzhou Dujinsheng Silk Factory. The right side is the name of the unviersity, Tianjin Peiyang University.
