The idyllic scene with the sunflowers, works of Chairman Mao and a rising sun over the water must have been a truly inspiring vision for the owner of these pots as they contemplated everyday survival during the Cultural Revolution.

This Cultural Revolution teapot is an interesting and unusual size - about a cup and a half capacity, which could in retrospect could have been seen as promoting individualism by actually allowing individuals to determine the amount or type of tealeaves to use, rather than submitting themselves to the will of the masses and using a communal teapot.

Small Ceramic Pot

This is an unusual item - a pint sized ceramic pot with very fine artwork with fantastic imagery. The girl on the bicycle is delivering the mail and the all important People's Daily newspaper and Red Flag magazine. The walled factories in the background show Cultural Revolution slogans of the day, with the ever present sunflowers in the foreground. Most unusually there is a chop from the artist.

Cultural Revolution Deep Dish Bowl

This is an unusual ceramic bowl from the Cultural Revolution because it is a deep bowl, rather than the more usual cereal bowl. It is 16cm in diameter and 7.5cm high. The design on the outside shows a globe with a Chinese flag and the words, "Mao Tse-Tung Thought Forever" and the words alone on the reverse side are, "The Cultural Revolution Depends on Mao Tse-Tung Thought".

Pair of Cultural Revolution Ceramic Bowls

These bowls are probably the most interesting and tastefully decorated bowls produced from that era. The gold band that wraps completely around the bowl is iridescent, which when combined with drawings of traditional CR themes - factories, farming, energy production and Mao Tse-Tung thought - makes this pair irresistible!

This serving tray from the Cultural Revolution is a great example of the propaganda produced and says 'The Red Sun Rises in the East', however the meaning is more complex with the Red Sun representing Chairman Mao and his vital role in the lives of the Chinese people, ie: they are unable to live without the sun or Mao.
